Vanier Park Cyclocros 2011
Written by admin
Tuesday, 23 August 2011 19:31

We are holding a cyclocross style event in Vanier Park for longer than we can remember; it must be for over 15 years. That is a pretty long time …

At first it was pretty rough since cross was new to most of us. We used old road bikes and of course our old hardtails. But back then we were KREBS Cycle Club anyway and still under the bridge, on the other side of Vanier Park. We still had lots of fun and fought hard and dirty. But we moved on from there.

Now we run the event on one of best pieces of land Vancouver has to offer. Thanks to the City of Vancouver we can play in the open overlooking the fancy skyline across the water.

And cross has evolved, too. We have dedicated bikes and a real BC Cup series with event all over the Lower Mainland, some on Vancouver Island and in the interior. And the course and the rules have changed, too. We have a mix of gravel, tarmac and grass, some stairs and some barriers and our bikes have tubular tires and lots of carbon. We drink protein shakes and eat space age gels before the start.

But we still have lots of fun, fight hard and dirty and even get the kids involved.

Welcome to the 2011 cyclocross season and welcome to the Vanier Park Cyclocross 2011.

Now with the 2011 cross season gathering steam with races nearly every weekend Cycling BC has provided us with a dedicated cyclocross page where you can find all the news about this discipline in the BC.

For this year we teamed up with TREK RedTruckRacing again and we hope to deliver a great spectacle with something for everybody. We have all the info compiled on our updated webpage Vanier Park Cyclocross 2011, the pre-reg is live and we are currently putting the finishing touches on the race course (please check back for updates).

Hope to see you – rain or shine – on Sunday, Oct 02, 2011 in Vanier Park.

Cardiac Classic BC Cup XC returns Sunday June 26 2011

The Cardiac Classic: the name alone inspires excitement for some, for others, fear… and for good reason; the race is aptly named. The course may seem unassuming, but those who have ridden –or more importantly climbed- the course, know better.

In the past, we have had some complaints that the Cardiac Classic course is too difficult, with climbs that are just too hard.  Naturally, we were incredulous, after all, this is a mountain bike race, and it isn’t supposed to be easy.  So, for you whiners, for those of you who would rather offer excuses than train, ride and race, we say this: stay at home, stretch out on the couch with your Coors Light and season 5 of Friends, and stop bothering us with your complaints.

Tire-spinning grinders to the top of Burnaby Mountain have been the hallmark of this race since its inception, and we have no intention of changing it now. Last year’s course was so challenging, Evan Guthrie’s face exploded.  OK, so it was just a nose-bleed, but he did bleed all over the course, his bike, pretty much ruined his number plate, and yet still managed to place second*.

But once you do finally make it to the top, the payback is the downhill, which is just a whole lot of fun. Sweeping technical descents take you through some of the best single-track in the area.  Burnaby Mountain is truly a hidden gem for flowing single-track, so don’t let the fact that it’s in the middle of the city fool you: this is legit riding, and proportionally, this race has a lot more great trail riding than most of the major races around these parts.

Once again, we will be running a free Trail Blaster Kids Race, so bring your kids and chase them around their own mini-cardiac course!

Back again for this year is a complimentary BBQ courtesy M&M Meats open to all racers, and we all know, nothing satisfies like a solid helping of meat and cold bevvies after slogging around a grueling course.

John Henry West Coast Super D
Written by admin
Monday, 27 April 2009 17:38

The 2nd running of the John Henry West Coast Super D is scheduled for Sunday April 10th at Belcarra. You can expect more of the same from the folks who brought this great event to you in 2010. You can also expect a different track as Gordo and the crew have been scoping out new lines to challenge every rider.

Stay tuned to this page for details on registration and updates for 2011.

See below for 2010 recap

They came, they shredded, they blew a few lungs, and they basked in the sun.  Did the 1st annual John Henry West Super D answer the question of who wins out of DH'er versus XC'er?  Round one goes to DH by a whisker, proving that the fresh Belcarra course design was a true test of rider ability regardless of bike type.  Just like the saying goes at John Henry Bikes, "It's all about the ride".  For full results and photographs Click here.
